Surfing in San Juan, La Union

San Juan, La Union is one of the famous surfing places in the Philippines. It is a 5 hour drive from Manila by car and up to 7 hours bus ride. We are not surfers but because my niece is coming from California for  her Christmas vacation, we explored the area and scouted for places for her to stay.

From the main road, we stopped by Kahuna Resort and inquired inside. It has nice garden rooms and beachfront rooms. It also has a swimming pool facing the beach.

For a 2 person room, ocean pool suite, it is P6,000 per night while the garden room for 2 is P4,500 per night. It includes a complimentary breakfast per person, and a complimentary 15 minute tension massage. It is the only resort in the area that has a swimming pool.

I walked by the beach and asked people around for the nicest beach resort. Everybody said that it's Kahuna but its rather expensive to stay there. I asked for a nicer place but pretty affordable and most recommended San Juan Surf Resort.

From the beach I walked towards the resort and walked straight to the reception area and inquired for their rates.

The front desk girl said that the standard aircon room for 2 persons is P1,760, the villas for 2 is P1,760, the fan room for 2 is P1,240. It comes with free breakfast for 2 persons.

It is still September and the waves are still not big enough to surf although there were people learning how to surf. I asked people by the beach and I learned that the perfect time to surf there is from mid october to early January.

I also asked around for the rates of surfing and most said that it's P400 per hour including the instructor. The rentals are on the beach itself and one can just approach the tents and rent them
